07.18.13-SGUL-Graduation-56

Looking over my records this turned out to be the fifth time I’ve covered St. George’s University of London (SGUL) graduation ceremony at The Barbican. One noticeable change from when I first started photographing these events is the prevalence of iphones and particularly this year ipad photography. It was a lovely day, perhaps one of the hottest so far this year, and as The Barbican isn’t one of the most well ventilated venues I felt sorry for the graduates sitting throughout the ceremony, most of them in suits with their heavy gowns on top of them. Over the years I’ve become accustomed to certain sweet spots in the venue that are good for photo opportunities, in particular an area near the stage where I usually to try and catch reactions from graduates walking across the stage. There were a few waves, smiles and a lucky save from one graduate who almost lost their mortarboard!
